Der-Chong Tsai, M.D., Ph.D., was born and raised in Taipei and graduated from the National Defense Medical University in 1997. He completed his internship, ophthalmology residency, and vitreoretinal fellowship at Taipei Veterans General Hospital, followed by a clinical observership at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Dr. Tsai later joined the Department of Ophthalmology at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) Hospital in Yilan, Taiwan.
Dr. Tsai is a vitreoretinal specialist with extensive clinical and surgical experience. He currently serves as the Director of the Department of Education and Research and a faculty member of the Department of Ophthalmology at NYCU Hospital, as well as a professor at the NYCU School of Medicine.
He earned his Ph.D. in epidemiology from the Institute of Public Health at NYCU and has focused much of his academic work on childhood myopia. He plays a key role in major population-based projects, including the Myopia Investigation Study in Taipei and the Yilan Myopia Prevention and Visual Improvement Program.
Dr. Tsai has authored several peer-reviewed publications covering clinical, database, and epidemiologic research in leading journals such as Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, British Journal of Ophthalmology, Retina, Acta Ophthalmologica and Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology. He is frequently invited to speak at academic conferences.
He is an active member of several professional societies, including the Taiwan Ophthalmological Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. Dr. Tsai also serves on the editorial boards of PLOS ONE and the Taiwan Journal of Ophthalmology.
