Dr.Cheng-Jen Chiu
Dr. Cheng-Jen Chiu is an ophthalmologist and clinical scientist with specialized expertise in myopia control, pediatric ophthalmology, orthokeratology (Ortho-K), and cataract surgery outcomes. He currently serves as Director of Pediatrics and Refraction at Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital and Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Science at Tzu Chi University. In these roles, he leads a broad portfolio of clinical and translational research aimed at improving vision care for children and underserved populations. Dr. Chiu’s research centers on mechanisms of myopia progression, corneal biomechanical changes associated with Ortho-K and atropine therapy and the development of tele-ophthalmology systems for remote communities. He has served as principal investigator on multiple funded studies spanning orthokeratology biomechanics, atropine efficacy, anisometropia management, and digital health innovation. He has authored more than 20 peer-reviewed publications in leading ophthalmic journals, including the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Translational Vision Science & Technology, Ophthalmic & Physiological Optics, Journal of Clinical Medicine, and the Journal of the Formosan Medical Association. His current research activities include clinical trials on next-generation orthokeratology lenses, longitudinal studies of axial length behavior, and investigations into diabetic retinopathy progression after cataract surgery. Dr. Chiu remains dedicated to advancing evidence-based pediatric myopia management and strengthening the accessibility and quality of ophthalmic services in rural and resource-limited regions.
