Professor Muhammad Bayu Sasongko earned his medical degree and completed his ophthalmology residency at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). He pursued master’s degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the School of Population and Health, University of Melbourne. He completed his doctoral training at the Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA), University of Melbourne, obtaining a PhD in Ophthalmology. He has undertaken extensive subspecialty training in ophthalmology, focusing on the medical and surgical retinal diseases. He completed a Research Fellowship at CERA, University of Melbourne, a Vitreo-Retinal Fellowship at Prof. Dr. Sardjito General Hospital/UGM, a Medical Retina and Uveitis Fellowship at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne, and a Vitreo-Retinal Fellowship at the Sydney Eye Hospital, Australia.
Now he is the Head of Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, UGM and has been in the faculty at UGM since 2001. He is the initiator of screening for diabetic retinopathy and blindness due to diabetes in the community, with the Jogjakarta Eye Diabetic Study in the Community (JOGED.COM) research. His research focused on developing a diabetic retinopathy screening system in the community through various tele-ophthalmology models.
He is currently Vice President of the Indonesian Ophthalmologist Association and previously served as Chairperson of the Young Ophthalmologist Forum. He also sits on the Board of the Indonesian College of Ophthalmologist and is a member of the Indonesian Vitreo-Retina Society. Internationally, he is affiliated with the Asia Pacific Tele-Ophthalmology Society, the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
