Taiji Sakamoto was the vice-President of Kagoshima University, since 2020, and the Chair at the Department of Ophthalmology, Kagoshima University since 2002 to 2025, and has been actively involved in both research and clinical work in retinal field up to date. He received his ophthalmology training at Kyushu University, Japan and worked at the Doheny Eye Institute, University of Southern California until 1995 under Dr Steve Ryan. He was the ex-President of Japanese Retina Vitreous Society (JRVS) and founded the international retinal congress, the FujiRetina. Prof. Sakamoto focused his research on angiogenesis, pharmacological treatment, gene therapy and surgical treatments for retinal conditions. He first developed triamcinolone-assisted vitrectomy independently. He established Japan's first retinal detachment registry. This registry has uncovered various unknown aspects of surgery. Most surprisingly, it is crucial for everyone to contemplate the suggestive and significant finding that ultimately societal intervention is necessary for the treatment of retinal detachment. In conclusion, both scientifically and socially, it has been understood that retinal detachment is “human ailment”. He is the board member of International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) and the member of Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis (AOI), Club Jules Gonin and others. He published 460 peer reviewed papers as of 2024 with h-index of 59 extensively on vitreoretinal disease . He is the co-editor-in-chief of Graefes Archives of Ophthalmology since 2017. He is the recipient of ARVO Gold Medal, Mori Award, JRVS 2024, Kreissig Award, Euretina 2024 and many others.
